Ostseebad Göhren

To the place and the region ...
The Baltic Sea resort of Göhren is located on the Mönchgut peninsula and also includes the easternmost point of the island of Rügen, the Cape Nordperd. The peninsula belongs to the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve and partly to the Mönchgut nature reserve. Several land tongues and bays offer plenty of space to relax. The Baltic Sea resort of Baabe is the northern neighbor and the Ostseebad Thiessow is waiting in the south. Göhren forms the end point of the steam -powered narrow -gauge railway ""Rasender Roland"". The Zickers mountains in the south of the peninsula are a popular excursion and hiking location with a clear view of the Boddenküsten and the Mönchgut peninsula. In addition to the guest houses and hotels, there is also a campsite.

To the history ...
The first settlements on the Mönchgut peninsula are dated around 8,000 years before Christ. Old hill graves, such as the ""duke grave"" in the Baaber Heide or the ""Speckbusch"" at the Göhren church, are witnesses of that time. In the 14th century, monks from the Eldena monastery near Greifswald acquired the ""Mönk Gut"" and managed it. After almost 200 years of Swedish rule from the 17th century, Rügen and Hiddensee 1815 passed in Prussian possessions. Towards the middle of the 19th century, you could acquire well and soil for agricultural purposes and the Baaber Heide was planted, which was the prelude for further buildings for flood protection. In 1878 Göhren was officially declared a seaside resort after welcoming the first bathers a few years earlier. The connection to the network of the narrow -gauge railway “Rasender Roland” ensured regular guest around and the associated advantages of tourism. Many guest houses and hotels in the style of the bath architecture were built. The decorated balconies, turrets and bodies of the villas are still popular sights and photo motifs as typical elements of this architectural style. In 2008 Göhren celebrated its 130th anniversary as an Baltic Sea resort.

Bathing opportunities

Baden and leisure
The beach of Göhren is divided into a north and south part. The middle forms the Cape Nordperd that is unsuitable for swimming with its cliffs. The fine, white sand of the north beach falls flat into the water and is very suitable for families with children. Rescue swimmers of the German Life Rescue Society ensure the safety of the guests from May to September. Nothing stands in the way of the undisturbed bathing fun. The southern beach offers original nature and amber finds are not uncommon here. The southern beach is also a popular morning destination for romantic sunrises. The 3 km beach promenade, also called amber promenade, is the lively meeting point in Göhrens. Numerous cafés and restaurants invite you to a cozy get -together in front of the backdrop of the Blue Baltic Sea and the beach. Furthermore, green areas, a listed music pavilion and the 280 m long pier can be explored during a walk. Playgrounds ensure that even the little guests get their money's worth. Numerous sporting activities are possible along the promenade, such as beach volleyball, kite surfing, beach football, diving and tennis. About 300 m northeastern off the Göhren coast is the largest boulder in the Baltic Sea so far - the bus Kam. Swimming is now classified as too dangerous and is prohibited. However, experienced diving instructors offer discovering tours in order to be able to look at the stone up close. A trip to the Cape Nordperd offers impressive views on the coast of the island of Usedom and the upstream ""Greifswalder Oie"", the easternmost of the German Baltic islands. Sassnitz and the Jasmund peninsula with their chalk cliffs can be seen in the northwest.
