The enchanting city of Siena ...
The Piazza del Campo is located at the center of the charming old town of Siena, which is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. This famous place captivates with its mussel -shaped structure and the impressive architecture. From the square it goes up to the cathedral of Siena, one of the most important Gothic buildings in Italy. It shines in the typical mix of black and white marble. Siena also houses one of the oldest universities in the country, whose students make up a large part of the residents and the atmosphere of the place. In the hinterland of Siena is the Val d’Orcia, a picturesque landscape with flat levels and cone -shaped hills, which has already inspired many painters.
The toughest horse race in the world ...
The famous Palio di Siena is held on the Piazza del Campo, the main square of the city. Each of the 17 riders represents a district. The winner is determined in three rounds on the specially prepared place, which then receives a colorful standard as a price. Since the horses are ridden unadjusted and mutual disabilities are allowed, it remains extremely exciting until the end. The race has been held twice a year since the Middle Ages, on July 2nd and August 16. For this purpose, the outer edge of the square is covered with sand. The rider, who by the way, have to do without a saddle, circle the space at a breathtaking speed. This is not harmless. The curve San Martino is particularly dangerous, where most of the falls regularly pass. The middle of the square is filled with the fifty thousand spectators. Only those who were up close can understand the effect of the square. This colorful spectacle and the race itself should not be missed when visiting the city or Tuscany.
